(1856-1915) Вашингтон, Букер ТалаверДеятель образования, реформатор, идеолог негритянской буржуазии. Его мать была рабыней-мулаткой, отец - белым. Получил педагогическое образование в Хамптонском институте [Hampton Institute; Hampton University], одновременно работая мусорщиком. С 1879 преподавал в Хамптоне, открыл там вечернюю школу. С 1881 - создатель и ректор Таскиджиского института [Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee University] в Алабаме. Выступал за преимущественно техническое образование для негров. В 1885 выступил с речью, в которой заявил, что негры не должны добиваться социального равенства с белыми до достижения экономического равенства с ними, за что подвергся резкой критике со стороны У. Дюбуа [ Du Bois, William Edward Burghardt (W. E. B.)] и др. В 1900 создал Национальную негритянскую лигу бизнеса [ National Negro Business League] и был ее президентом. Автор ряда книг, в том числе "Будущее американского негра" ["The Future of the American Negro"] (1899), "Путь из рабства" ["Up From Slavery"] (1901), "Жизнь Фредерика Дугласа" ["Life of Frederick Douglass"], "История негров" ["The Story of the Negro"] (1909).
